Members of the CoAI JRC launch SAIL, a new network for sustainable AI design

In March, the SAIL research network (SustAInable Life-cycle of Intelligent Socio-Technical Systems) was launched with a kick-off event at Paderborn University. The network will explore how AI systems can operate in a sustainable, transparent, secure, resource-efficient way over a long product life cycle, with the aim of developing foundations for the sustainable design of AI components whilst also preserving human self-determination. The network will focus on two highly relevant areas of application: workplaces in industry and assistance systems in healthcare.

This highly interdisciplinary 4-year joint project involves approximately 90 researchers from Paderborn University, Bielefeld University, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSBI) and OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts (TH OWL). The network will receive up to 14.8 million euros of funding from the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia.
