Constructing Explainability

With the interdisciplinary Transregional Collaborative Research Center (TRR), we propose a new paradigm for explainable AI, in which humans and AI systems co-construct explanations. Within this paradigm, humans play an active part by co-shaping the goal and the process of developing an explanation, which promotes humans’ active and mindful participation in sociotechnical settings with AI technologies and increases their informational sovereignty. The TRR brings together linguists, psychologists, media studies researchers, sociologists, economists, and computer scientists.
